Our Girls2Women Campaign is developed to change the way our women and young girls perceive and embrace the true definition of beauty. We strictly want to free ourselves and the next generation from the media beauty stereotypes which always includes sharp nose, blonde hair, light skin tone, thin, long legs and so much more. Sadly, most of us have ignored our own unique Asian features and has fully allows the media to set our mind in term of beauty. This causes a severe low self-esteem problem to us as we strive hard to match the ‘girls in the ads’.
Through research, it shows that there is a direct and distinct link between a girl’s ideas about beauty and body image and the influence of a positive role model like her mother or another mentor in her life. A recent study also showed that although there are several factors that influence girls’ self-esteem including peers, celebrities, boyfriends and messages sent by media; mothers and other female role models are still in a very strong position to shape how narrowly or widely a girl defines “beauty.”
In this campaign, an idea related to this perception came up repeatedly. We are sure that if mothers and other adult mentors of young girls could become more aware of their own attitudes towards their body and those girls who look up to them, they could help the girls resist the powerful influence of a culture that challenges their sense of beauty and self-worth.
The activities which have been planned during the campaign are designed to raise self-esteem by encouraging girls and their role models to embrace their unique beauty. The goal is to help women empower girls to become stronger and more confident.
